AND NOW THE OSCAR NOMINATIONS ARE OFFICIAL

So click here and read Indiewire’s list of the nominees and compare it to Guy Flatley’s predictions, as listed below on this page. And perhaps ask yourself this: Whatever happened to John Hawkes, Marion Cotillard, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Matthew McConaughey and Wes and Paul Thomas Anderson? Not to mention Kathryn Bigelow, the only woman ever to win a Best Director Oscar (for "The Hurt Locker"). To the amazement of many, Bigelow was denied a nomination for her bold direction of "Zero Dark Thirty," even though screenwriter Mark Boal and actress Jessica Chastain were nominated for their contributions to this critically acclaimed film. Go figure.

WHO WILL BE TAKING HOME A STATUETTE ON THE 24TH OF FEBRUARY? BELOW, A FEW CLUES

There's a big bundle of heavyweight contenders in this race, a situation that makes it especially tough for anyone trying to predict the outcome of the Oscar race for the Best of 2012. Nevertheless, here are my guesses on the films and filmmakers I think the Academy members will honor with nominations. Not every category is included, nor do these picks necessarily reflect my personal taste. We’ll see how sharp—or off-target --I am when the choices are announced early on the morning of Thursday, January 10. –Guy Flatley
